20 Days of Gold Making: Day 12–What was your Biggest “Oops” Moment

This is an easy one. My biggest mistake hurt, a lot, and I’m still clinging on to the remains of it so I get reminded periodically of my number one biggest mistake in my gold making history.

Long time readers (and those with good memory) may remember back in June of 2012 I talked about my first foray into guild leading. I haven’t written an update about that little project (at least I don’t think I have) for one very good reason: It was a complete and utter flop. Trying to build a guild off mass invites isn’t as easy as it looks, there really is little to no guild loyalty, and I really didn’t have the patience.

That wasn’t really the mistake though. If you go back to that article you’ll notice how much I paid for it: 250,000 gold. Soon after I made the purchase the market collapsed, mainly for two reasons:

  • It was made easier to level guilds
    • Character’s contributions to guild experience was tweaked
    • Daily cap on guild experience was removed
  • It was announced that new levels would not be added for guilds in Mists of Pandaria

The second point was probably very minor compared to the first.

But there you have it, my single largest mistake in gold making, to the tune of approximately 250,000 gold. It’s kind of a first world problem though, having that much gold to lose. But still, it hurts.

I bought a Battered Hilt out of the AH for my ret paladin with the intention of using the Lightborn Spire reward as transmog.

Turns out that I could only get the swords as a reward, and the 2H mace was for non-sword users. I was pretty heartbroken as I had planned on using that transmog for months.

I felt like a complete idiot for never having looked up more info on the hilt. :(

Back when MOP launched I was raking it in from selling glyphs to pandas and monks, it was then I hit the highest amount of gold I’d ever had, around 300k. Then a couple months later, the TCG mount card fel-drake was released and I had to have it. Luckily there was a guy selling it on my server. He was asking 300k for it on the ah, but I didn’t want to spend all my gold so he agreed to sell it to me for 280k. Unknown to me at the time, he actually had 2 fel-drake loot cards, which he then put up the other one on the AH. It sat up there for a long time, he would lower the price 10k every 2 days, it got down to around half of what I payed for it before he stopped reposting it. I don’t regret it though, its still one of my favorite mounts in the game and I’ve almost hit gold cap since then. I just should have waited a little bit.

Ouch. That’s why I hate buying big ticket items like that. Well, that and I hate seeing my gold balance go down :P

    Don’t worry about that!

I bought my lvl 25 guild for 300k back in Cata. Did I regret it? Nope, even after the removal of “will travel” still happy with it. I enjoy the nice, huge bank tabs as I work in the MoP AH. Enjoy the mass rez, mobile banking. So I still love it.

I have another good news for you: if you collected that 250k in Cata than you can do much more now. After the purchase of that guild and use the space I’m up to 2.2 million gold… so go and use it well. Perks like DE helps a lot etc. I think you should regret it if you strictly was thinking about flip it. Otherwise no reason….

I don’t really need the space now, heck, I’m barely even using my bank alt’s guild bank. Honestly at this point I’d rather have the gold lol
