Did HonorBuddy’s Offline Time Affect Prices?

Before the patch hit I reported shortly after Patch 5.0.4. hit HonorBuddy went down for a week after the patch. Anecdotally I noticed a huge spike in prices and drop in availability immediately after the patch and in the days following. The question is, was it just me or was there really a noticeable affect after the patch?

Lets start off by look at herb prices. All stats are from The Undermine Journal using the world view for each item, the resolution zoomed into the Aug 13th – September 16th range. Keep in mind the Patch 5.0.4. dropped on August 28th on US servers, and August 29th on EU servers.

Notice it? Immediately after the patch prices spiked across the board and supply dropped, and still haven’t recovered in some spots. While HonorBuddy has returned to service since, there is the possibility that other bots in use are still down for the count.

If you pay attention to the quantities, you’ll notice that supply drops in some cases by up to 300k, suggesting that bots account for about a third of total goods production. Something to note though is that it might be higher or lower than this, dependent on these factors:

  • Demand might have dropped as well leaving more supply on the auction house
  • Regular players could have also stopped farming following the patch to play with the patch’s new features
  • Regular botters could have had a backlog they were still selling while the bot was down
  • Market price only counts the bottom 15%, but Quantity available counts all auctions

Lets take a look at the ores then shall we?

Again with the ore you will see a noticeable change during the patch. Something interesting here is that the supply of Elementium Ore on the EU auction houses dropped by 2 million! That’s right, that’s a 2 with six 0’s behind it.

It’s debatable whether or not all this can be attributed to HonorBuddy and other bots going offline, correlation doesn’t mean causation after all, but it is highly suggestive.

Personally I think the bulk of this comes from the bot downtime, though I’m sure others will disagree with me.

So what do you think? Did the lack of bots have any major affect on your server do you think? Would love to hear stories or anecdotes from the immediate post patch period.

I can confirm this from my server.
The demand after a patch is always higher. In combination with the botter downtime it led to very significant price increases instantly, which have slowly normalized since then.

Honorbuddy remains in test release for development even now, so I wouldn’t say it’s back 100%. Other bots have emerged to fill the gap and capitalize on HB’s downtime. On top of that, it’s difficult to get a clear picture at this point in the expansion when it’s basically on life support.

    But a thorough analysis, nonetheless.
